Did you know that there will be more than 17 million new cases of cancer diagnosed on a global scale by the end of 2018?

Cancer can seem like a death sentence. There is no arguing that battling this terrible disease, in whatever form it takes, is frightening, overwhelming, and difficult. Cancer is a devastating disease that can affect different organs and other parts of your body. There are more than 25 different types of cancer, all of which cause symptoms that range from slight discomfort to severe pain.

Seeking professional treatment is essential, but there are also alternative supports that will help you to control your condition. Hemp-derived CBD extract can help to relieve symptoms, such as nausea, pain, insomnia, and even encourages healing and recovery.*

Using CBD for Cancer Support

Cannabidiol or CBD is part of a group of compounds called cannabinoids. CBD and other cannabinoids can be found in the hemp plant. CBD affects us by influencing the Endocannabinoid system of our bodies.

Also known as the ECS, the Endocannabinoid system plays a role in nearly every function of the body, from hormones to digestion, neurological activity and more. Even though the functions of the ECS are still being investigated, many believe that it plays a major role in different physiological processes that influence cancer development.

While there’s still much research and controversy over the idea that CBD can even ‘cure’ cancer, there is at least consensus that CBD can be an incredibly helpful support in relieving common side effects of cancer and standard cancer treatments.

Chronic Pain

CBD has been recognized as an effective alternative for chronic pain alternative in Canada for more than a decade. There are many studies that examine the effect CBD has on chronic pain, and even within our own local community in Madison, Wisconsin, we’ve seen that CBD can be extremely helpful for relieving many types of complex pain issues.

And, in addition to its analgesic properties, this extract is well-tolerated when compared to mainstream pain-relief remedies. Unlike OTC drugs and prescription painkillers that can damage the kidneys, liver, and intestines over time (among other serious side effects), CBD extract has very few possible side effects and actually supports the overall health of the body.

Inflammation

Different types of cancer may cause internal inflammation, resulting in discomfort and even the interruption of vital functions. Some studies suggest that CBD may play a role in the regulation of immune responses, which presents an opportunity to develop new anti-inflammatory remedies. Part of the reason that CBD extracts are helpful in relieving pain is due to their ability to ease inflammation.

CBD is also unique in that it’s properties aren’t contained to one area. It is equally effective in relieving inflammation in the digestive tract through softgels or drops as it is in relieving swelling in joints through a balm.

Loss of Appetite

Many cancer patients experience loss of appetite. Typically, this is a side effect of cancer treatments or pain. Luckily, there’s mounting evidence that suggests a direct involvement of the ECS in the regulation of hunger. This is the reason why many cancer patients are using CBD to help stimulate their appetite. If you’re not taking in nutrients and nourishment, your body will have a difficult time healing.

Nausea and Vomiting

Nausea can be one of the most debilitating symptoms associated with cancer. It is a frequent side effect of chemotherapy and other common cancer treatments.

Recent findings have clearly defined a link between the Endocannabinoid system and nausea regulation. CBD may also help reduce intestinal inflammation, which can mitigate gastrointestinal irritation, pain, and other signs of cancer in the digestive tract.

Stress, Depression, and Anxiety

Being diagnosed with cancer is life-altering. Unsurprisingly, the stress of the diagnosis can result in anxiety, panic attacks, depression, and other adjustment disorders. There’s growing evidence that CBD can offer calming and uplifting effects to the mood. A recent survey backed up this notion, with 50% of respondents saying they experienced relief from stress or anxiety when using hemp derived remedies.

Irregular Sleep Patterns and Insomnia

CBD shows excellent potential as a sleep regulator. It works through the ECS system, helping to regulate your hormonal and chemical balance. This ‘balancing act’ helps to physically and mentally relax, encouraging sleep to come more easily. Studies are also indicating that CBD oil shows promise for REM sleep behavior disorders, increasing both the quality and the length of the REM cycle.

Possible Ability to Inhibit the Growth and Spreading of Cancerous Cells

Cancer spreads through the body through a process called metastasis. When studied in a controlled “test tube” environment, CBD has shown the ability to stop the migration, invasion, and proliferation of cancer cells.

In addition to this, research in mice also backup CBD’s ability to provide an anti-invasive alternative. More research is essential and we’re excited to see what evidence researchers may be able to uncover in the coming years.

Finding a Healthy Support System

Being diagnosed with cancer may be challenging. But with the right support system, you may be able to reduce the symptoms and live a plain, enjoyable life. There are more than 15 million cancer survivors in the US. Many of these are starting to turn to CBD for support.

It is vital to remember, however, that there is no such thing as a ‘miracle cure’. While CBD has proven to be vastly successful for many, what works for many (or even most) will not work for everyone. If you have questions on whether CBD may work for you, we’d encourage you to give us a call or come to one of our stores. We’ll be glad to help you explore CBD options and find what works for you.
