With a great big world that’s full of things to explore our children need the best night sleep possible. So what do you do when they’re struggling to fall asleep or unable to calm down at night? I’m going to share with you three super easy tips. So let’s dive right in, here we go:

Number 1. Establish a Bedtime Routine

This may be easier said than done, but seriously, if your kids struggle with sleep do your whole family a favor and focus on establishing a calm, peaceful bedtime routine. This means following the same steps leading up to bedtime every night. Ideally in the same order such as brushing teeth and putting on pajamas and then reading a book.

Also important is considering how much sleep your kid needs. This will be to your benefit since adequate sleep means fewer breakdowns, meltdowns, and all the downs during the next day. Of course we all know that babies need a ton of sleep. But don’t forget to allow plenty of time for your preschooler and older kids too.

  • 10 – 13 hours of sleep is recommended for kids aged 3 – 5
  • 9 – 11 hours of sleep is recommended for kids aged 5 – 13
  • 9 – 10 hours of sleep per night is recommended for kids aged 14 – 17

Number 2. Avoid Screens

One of the best ways to get kids to sleep is by avoiding screens at least 30 minutes to an hour before going to bed. The main reason for this is that blue light suppresses the sleep hormone melatonin. Studies show that letting your kids spend time on a TV, computer, phone, or tablet before bed leads to disturbed sleep and shortens their sleep duration. But that’s not all!

In addition to limiting screens before bed it’s best to limit the type of content your kids are watching during the day. if your kid is watching too many shows or seeing media content that is violent, their sleep may be disturbed no matter the time of the day the content is being consumed. Public guidelines advise that kids ages 2 – 5 watch no more than one hour of screen time per day, while their children over 5 can safely consume 2 hours per day.

Number 3. Supplements

Many parents wonder about supplements for kids to help with sleep and today I want to share with you two of our absolute favorite kids supplements. Trust me when I say they’ve been a lifesaver for more than one sleep-deprived parent at The Healthy Place.

The first is called Gryph & Ivyrose — Call It A Night Herbal sleep supplement. This kid’s sleep supplement features a blend of herbs and is designed to relax the nerves. It is a gentle remedy that encourages deep, restful, sleep with fewer nightly interruptions. It promotes relaxation and a calm mind, calms tummy aches or butterflies, and fights off anxiety and insomnia. With ingredients like Chinese Salvia Root, Arborvitae Seed, Silk Tree Flower and lots more! Call It A Night Herbal is made in the U.S. with organic ingredients and is pediatrician approved.

Next, we love Nordic Naturals — Zero Sugar Melatonin Gummies. These gummies come in a delicious raspberry flavor and are made without gelatin or added sugar. Studies show that melatonin helps to enhance sleep by synchronizing the body’s sleep-wake cycle and it can be especially helpful in children who are stressed, struggling with insomnia, have a medical condition that disturbs their sleep, have ADHD or who are on the autism spectrum.

It’s also handy when traveling and dealing with time zone changes. Dosing melatonin for kids is different than dosing for adults. If you’re interested in this kids sleep supplement be sure to reach out to us for more information.

Bonus tips! Here are 4 more ways to help your kids sleep better at night. Make sure they have a full tummy before bed. You can even try giving them sleep promoting foods before bed like avocados, bananas, and yogurt. Give them the chance to talk about their feelings or any bedtime fears, diffuse lavender or chamomile essential oils, and run an epsom bath to help their muscles relax before bed.
