CBD oil awareness is on the rise, and plenty of animal studies are being done. As more people begin to familiarize themselves with the healing power of this herb, they wonder if it might be a viable health solution for four-legged family members as well.

CBD oil has opened up a new channel of natural healing therapy options for pets. Just like most mammals, dogs have a similar anatomy to humans, and one of the systems we share is the endocannabinoid system. This system influences a variety of receptors in the body that control immune function, sleep, inflammation, appetite, and much more.

The cannabinoids in the CBD oil interact with the receptors in the endocannabinoid system. These reactions trigger your body’s natural healing responses and modulate things like pain, anxiety, and nausea. Diminished pain and inflammation, reduced vomiting and nausea, and a lessened anxiety are all common CBD oil benefits for both humans and our furry friends.

Here’s a sampling of the various health conditions in pets that CBD oil has been shown to help improve:

  • Allergies
  • Anxiety
  • Poor appetite
  • Arthritis
  • Cancer
  • Chronic pain
  • Deteriorating quality of life
  • Digestive issues
  • Fatty tumors
  • Glaucoma
  • Homeostasis
  • Inflammatory Bowel Disease
  • Inflammation
  • Joint and mobility problems
  • Phobias (Fireworks, Thunderstorm)
  • Seizures
  • Skin problems

Unlike most pain relief medications, whether prescription or over-the-counter, CBD oil has almost no serious side effects or risks. No damage to the liver or kidneys (one of the most common issues with other pain medications) or GI tract. And, because CBD oil does not contain THC, the dogs are not high or sedated.

The Difference Between CBD and THC

It’s important to note that CBD and THC are not the same. CBD oil and THC may come from the same plant family, but they are radically different when it comes to use. THC is the component responsible for creating a high, while CBD is responsible for producing the medical benefits we’re looking for. Only choose a CBD oil that does NOT contain any THC, as THC can be harmful to dogs.

CBD Oil for Pain Relief In Dogs

CBD oil is well-recognized most for its almost miraculous pain-relieving abilities. Studies have shown that CBD oil’s pain-relieving powers surpassed those of morphine in relation to tumors and cancer.

CBD oil for dogs can help relieve pain caused by;

  • Acute ailments such as sprains, strains, and torn ligaments
  • Broken bones
  • Arthritis
  • Neuropathy and nerve-related pain
  • Pain associated with inflammation in the bowels
  • Pain associated with inflammation within the organs, such as pancreatitis
  • Injuries
  • Post-operative surgery inflammation, stiffness, and pain
  • Illness
  • Cancer, tumors

Most pain that we (and our dogs) experience is due to inflammation within the body. CBD oil triggers the CB2 receptors in our endocannabinoid systems, reducing the release of inflammatory hormones, such as histamine and serotonin, while encouraging our bodies to heal and naturally reduce inflammation.

A natural, safe, and simple pain relief option for everyone in the family.

CBD Oil for Dogs with Cancer

Cancer is one of the most common diseases that afflict our furry friends. According to this article, fifty percent of dogs over the age of 10 will develop cancer. Common forms of cancer range from malignant lymphoma to breast cancer and skin cancer. This is always a difficult diagnosis to hear, and treatment is often complicated, ineffectual, and extremely expensive.

CBD oil has gained significant attention recently, thanks to studies (like this one and this one) that demonstrate CBD oil’s ability stop cancer cells from growing and increase the death rate of tumor cells.

As if this weren’t enough, CBD oil can also:

  • Boost the immune system
  • Block cancer cell’s ability to produce energy, eventually killing them
  • Slow and inhibit glioma cell growth
  • Relieve pain and inflammation associated with cancer
  • Increase appetite and reduce nausea

For those that choose conventional cancer treatments, CBD oil still has a role to play. CBD oil can reduce the negative health impact of cancer treatments, making them more effective.

CBD Oil to Increase Appetite

CBD oil safely and naturally increases your dog’s appetite and helps to curb nausea. The National Cancer Institute comments on this benefit of CBD oil in relation to humans and thousands of anecdotal stories confirm that the same benefits apply to our pets as well.

According to this study, CBD oil can also help animals struggling with nausea and vomiting. This applies even when the vomiting is a result of toxins or drugs — though, if you suspect that your dog has been exposed to toxic materials or drugs, we strongly encourage contacting your vet immediately.

Dogs can stop eating for a variety of reasons, including:

  • Cancer treatments
  • Old age
  • Chronic pain
  • Indigestion/nausea or chronic bowel problems
  • Stress
  • Behavioral issues (such as pickiness)
  • Dental disease

If your dog is not eating, we recommend taking him/her to the vet to identify the cause before trying CBD oil to encourage appetite. Lack of appetite may indicate a more serious medical condition and may worsen conditions such as a bowel blockage.

CBD Oil for Dogs with Seizures

Up to 5% of dogs suffer from seizures. Most of these dogs are medicated with drugs, such as phenobarbital and potassium bromide. These medications have a long list of harmful side effects, most of which include liver, kidney, and intestinal damage.

While there are no completed studies for the treatment of seizures in dogs using CBD oil, there are some actually going on right now — check it out here. Although there are no clinical studies proving the efficacy for dogs, there are plenty of testimonies from other dog-lovers. These dog owners state that CBD oil helped reduce the frequency of episodes for their dogs, either partially or completely.

And, of course, there are studies confirming the benefit of CBD oil in helping reduce seizures in humans.

CBD Oil for Anxiety and Aggression (Stress Disorders)

Is your dog’s worst day of the year the 4th of July? Are thunderstorms its idea of Armageddon? Is the mailman suspected of being a doggy axe murderer?

Some dogs can be a little high-strung. Their anxiety can manifest in fear responses, such as hiding under the bed (or your legs), trembling or whimpering. They may also respond with growling, barking, and other aggressive behaviors.

Most pets only experience situational anxiety, which means that their anxiety is caused by a particular activity or experience, and does not occur all of the time. The most common of these are thunderstorms, fireworks, guests (or the mailman), and travel.

Using CBD oil for dogs can be a life-saver for many pet owners. It reduces stress and calms your pet. CBD oil can be administered daily to high-strung dogs or used situationally when you know your dog is about to go into a tailspin. (Trip to the vet, anyone?)

Don’t get us wrong — CBD oil is not a replacement for training and cuddles, but it can be a powerful aid in helping your dog stay calm, peaceful, and happy. And we all know that a happy pup equals a happy pup-parent.

Please seek help for aggressive behaviors from a certified dog trainer. CBD may aid in relieving symptoms of stress disorders and situational anxiety, but any concerns with aggression or behavioral disorders should be addressed with a professional dog trainer or veterinarian.

CBD Oil Side Effects and Risks for Dogs

CBD oil is ridiculously safe for pets — when used correctly. Like any medication, there are a few rules to follow.

  • Rule 1. Do not give your dogs CBD oil in food items that are harmful to dogs, such as chocolate, raisins, or coffee.
  • Rule 2. Do not EVER give your dog marijuana or items that contain THC or other mind-altering drugs. If your dog ingests THC, contact your vet.
  • Rule 3. Always start slowly when treating your dog with CBD oil. Follow the recommended dosage, starting low and gradually increasing until you see the desired result. Check in with your veterinarian if your dog is currently taking any other medications.
  • Rule 4. Be choosey on your CBD oil brand. For dogs, the biggest risk arises if they ingest THC. Be cautious. Some types of oil are contaminated with THC or have been processed improperly. You could end up giving your pet a CBD product that has high psychoactivity or toxicity level. We carry a specific CBD oil for dogs, which is hemp-based and contains no THC.

Serious reactions from medical CBD are extremely rare. The most common side effect of CBD is drowsiness, though some dogs may experience itching or mild vomiting. If these side effects occur, discontinue use and speak with your vet.

How Much CBD Oil Should I Give My Dog?

When it comes to dosage, figuring out the right amount can take time. Dosing recommendations can be difficult to find, and the correct dosage for one brand of CBD oil may not be the same as another brand. This is another reason we strongly recommend choosing a high-quality CBD oil specifically for dogs, not humans, as it will contain dosing recommendations specific to that product and your pup.

How To Give Your Dog CBD Oil

There are three ways to administer CBD oil to your dogs. Though topical treatments are available, they are, unsurprisingly, difficult to apply. The best way to administer CBD oil for dogs is orally. CBD oil allows for precise dosing and typically has a much quicker reaction time than other forms of medical CBD.

We have a few tricks up our sleeves for this. While some dogs won’t mind the smell and taste of CBD oil, placing it directly into their mouths can be hard (and messy). Add a few drops of CBD oil to their food, their water, or directly onto a dog treat.

I use a CBD product situationally with a couple of my cats. I believe it helped my angry girl get over her dislike of seeing other cats in the show ring. One of my big boys would really benefit I think but he hates the oil. He loves coconut oil though, I think that infusion product would be right up his alley. Thanks for explaining such a most useful topic with nice explanation. Keep posting!
