Prenatal vitamins provide a variety of vitamins and minerals that are essential for the healthy development of your baby. Prenatal vitamins also prepare a woman’s body for pregnancy, and are important during pregnancy planning! Folic acid is an example of a vitamin that is essential during the first few weeks of pregnancy – before you may know that you are pregnant. Adequate levels of folic acid reduce the risk for problems with the baby’s spine and brain (neural tube defects). The need for other nutrients, such as calcium and iron, increase during pregnancy and are vital for fetal development.

The best prenatal vitamins contain balanced nutrients that meet the needs of moms-to-be and the developing baby. Of course diet is very important during pregnancy and you’ll want to be sure to consume a healthy diet containing unprocessed foods, a colorful variety of fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and protein. Despite good intentions it can be difficult to consistently stick with your dietary goals – prenatal vitamins work to fill in the gaps to make sure both mom and baby are receiving the nutrition they need!
