What is an elemental diet?

Elemental diets are often used when gastrointestinal function is less than ideal.* They’re made with gentle formulas and easily digestible nutrients, so the body doesn’t have to work so hard to obtain essential nutrition. FAQs About Integrative Therapeutics Physicians Elemental Diet™ Dextrose Free Powder

Q: How should I take this powder for best tolerance? A: Drink it slowly, not all at once. One heaping scoop is 33.3 grams mixed into 7 to 8 ounces of cold or room-temperature water, and most people do better if they sip it over 15 to 60 minutes.

Q: Does this have sugar or dextrose in it? A: No, this version is dextrose-free. The carb source is tapioca maltodextrin, and the fat source is medium chain triglycerides, or MCTs.

Q: Why does this one use free-form amino acids instead of whole protein? A: It’s meant to be easier to absorb. Instead of whole proteins, it uses individual amino acids like L-glutamine, L-leucine, L-lysine hydrochloride, L-valine, and L-threonine, so your digestive system has less work to do.

Q: Should I use this as a meal replacement or alongside food? A: Usually, this is used as a main nutrition product for a short period, not as a casual protein shake. I’d follow your practitioner’s plan here, because elemental diets are typically used in specific nutrition protocols under professional guidance.

Q: I've heard elemental formulas can taste rough. Can I mix this with anything besides water? A: I’d stick with water unless your practitioner says otherwise. If the flavor feels too strong, add a little more water. It usually goes down easier cold, too.

Q: My doctor said to watch my B vitamins. What forms are in this one? A: A few of the B vitamins are in active forms, which some people specifically look for. This one uses riboflavin-5-phosphate for B2, pyridoxal-5-phosphate for B6, Quatrefolic for folate, and methylcobalamin for B12.

Q: Is there anything I should be careful with before starting this? A: Yes, especially if you have a medical condition, take medications, or plan to use it as your only nutrition. Talk with your doctor first. If you’re pregnant or nursing, check with your OB or midwife before starting this one.
