When CBD won't work

The research on CBD for sleep is mixed. Some studies show it helps, some show it doesn't, and a handful suggest it actually shortens deep-sleep ripples. So if you've been reading articles that claim CBD is a guaranteed sleep cure, you haven't been reading good articles.

Here's what we can tell you from actually working with people on this every week. A meaningful chunk of the folks walking into our Madison, Sun Prairie, and Fitchburg stores with sleep issues get real improvement on CBD. Others don't feel much at all. This guide is mostly about helping you figure out which camp you're probably in, before you drop $40 on a bottle of gummies.

Does CBD actually help you sleep?

Short answer: sometimes, for some people, at the right dose. The longer honest answer is that CBD doesn't work by sedating you the way melatonin or diphenhydramine do. It works more indirectly, usually by lowering the anxiety or physical discomfort that was keeping you awake. If what keeps you up is a racing mind at 2am, CBD has a decent shot. If your issue is pure sleep architecture (shift work, jet lag, circadian rhythm disorders), CBD isn't your tool.

A few points the current research does support:

  • CBD at doses of 25mg or higher may reduce sleep-disrupting anxiety in the short term (Shannon et al., 2019, Permanente Journal).
  • CBD combined with CBN or melatonin often produces stronger sleep effects than CBD alone.
  • The benefit tends to plateau. Doubling the dose rarely doubles the effect.
  • Effects are often most noticeable in the first few weeks. Some people report tolerance building over time.

The research gap is large. Most published CBD sleep studies are small, short, or industry-funded. We're being transparent about that because you deserve to know.

How CBD interacts with your sleep

CBD works through the endocannabinoid system (ECS), a network of receptors your body uses to regulate mood, pain, appetite, and sleep. CBD doesn't bind directly to the main ECS receptors the way THC does. It modulates them indirectly, which is why CBD doesn't get you high and generally doesn't cause the grogginess of traditional sleep aids.

What CBD can do for sleep:

  • Calm the anxious thought loops that delay sleep onset
  • Reduce physical discomfort (muscle tension, mild pain) that interrupts sleep
  • Support a slightly longer sleep duration in some users
  • Produce subjective "feel-rested" effects without the fog of Benadryl-style sleep aids

What CBD doesn't reliably do:

  • Fix shift-work or jet-lag-related sleep issues
  • Treat clinical insomnia as a standalone therapy
  • Address sleep apnea (see a sleep specialist)
  • Replace a consistent sleep schedule and dark room

CBD vs CBN vs CBG: which cannabinoid is actually best for sleep?

We get asked this constantly. All three are hemp-derived cannabinoids, but they do different things.

CBD (cannabidiol). The most-studied of the three. Works primarily on anxiety and physical tension. If your sleep problem is mental chatter, start here.

CBN (cannabinol). The rising star for sleep specifically. CBN is what THC becomes as it ages and degrades. It has mildly sedating properties and a longer half-life than CBD. Products pairing CBD with CBN (often a 3:1 or 4:1 CBD-to-CBN ratio) tend to produce more noticeable sleep effects. Wild Theory Dream Oil (60mg CBN + 1000mg CBD) is one of our strongest-selling sleep-specific options for that reason.

CBG (cannabigerol). Known as the "mother cannabinoid" because most other cannabinoids start as CBG. It's more stimulating than sedating for most people, which is why you see CBG marketed for focus during the day. It can have mild anti-anxiety effects that indirectly help sleep, but it's not a direct sleep compound.

If you're new to cannabinoids and want to start simple: try a CBD + CBN combination, not pure CBD alone. The sleep-specific effect is noticeably stronger.

Gummies vs oil vs capsules: picking your format

The cannabinoid does the work. The format affects timing, flavor, and absorption.

Gummies. Easiest format, tastes best, most popular. Onset takes 45 to 90 minutes because it has to go through your digestive system. Effect lasts 4 to 6 hours. Good for people who want to take it an hour before bed and forget about it. Downsides: slightly less CBD reaches your bloodstream (around 15 to 20% bioavailability) compared to oil.

Oil tincture (sublingual). Drops held under the tongue for 60 seconds before swallowing. Onset is 15 to 30 minutes, significantly faster than gummies. Effect lasts 4 to 6 hours. Bioavailability is roughly 25 to 35%, so you get more mileage per mg. Taste is hempy; flavored versions help. Best for people who want faster onset or who wake up at 3am and need something that kicks in quickly.

Capsules/softgels. Similar onset and duration to gummies (they all have to digest). Advantage is precise dosing and no flavor. Garden of Life Dr. Formulated CBD + Sleep Softgels is a solid option if you prefer the clinical feel of a capsule over a gummy.

How much CBD should you take for sleep?

A general starting point for sleep is 25mg of CBD taken 45 to 90 minutes before bed. Some people get effects at 10mg. Others need 50mg or 100mg to feel anything. Individual response varies more for CBD than for most supplements.

Our recommended approach:

  1. Start at 10 to 25mg for the first few nights
  2. If no effect after 5 nights, increase by 10 to 25mg
  3. If you hit 100mg with no effect, CBD is likely not your tool (stop and reassess)
  4. If you feel groggy the next morning, back off

Doses tend to plateau. If 50mg works, 100mg usually won't work twice as well. And CBD has a wide safety margin, but more is not better.

For CBD+CBN products, the CBN dose matters more than the CBD dose for sleep specifically. 5 to 15mg CBN paired with 25 to 50mg CBD is the typical effective range.

The 7 CBD products our customers come back for

These aren't paid placements. These are the ones customers reorder after first purchase. If you're local, we can show you any of them.

+PlusCBD Sleep Gummies 10mg

The gateway product. Lower dose (10mg CBD per gummy), melatonin included, easy on the wallet. Good for first-time CBD users who want to see if it helps without committing to a premium product.

+PlusCBD Reserve Sleep Gummies

The premium option from the same brand. Higher-grade full-spectrum extract, richer cannabinoid profile, bigger effect. If the basic PlusCBD didn't do much, this often does.

Charlotte's Web Hemp Gummies: Calm

Not strictly a sleep product, but most of our customers using it take it 45 minutes before bed for racing-mind issues. The Charlotte's Web extract is consistent and well-tested. Gold standard on the brand side.

Wild Theory Dream Broad Spectrum CBD Oil

60mg CBN + 1000mg CBD in a tincture. This is our top recommendation when someone tells us regular CBD didn't move the needle. The CBN adds real sedating effect without grogginess. Faster onset than gummies because it's sublingual.

Wild Theory Strata PM Gummies

2.5mg THC + 15mg CBN + 30mg CBD. The strongest sleep-specific product we carry. The micro-dose of THC (below the legal 0.3% threshold) amplifies the sleep effect without a psychoactive high in most people. Not for first-timers.

Medterra Sleep Tight Gummies

A CBD + melatonin gummy with a reliable night-of effect. Medterra's quality control is strong and the dosing is consistent. Our middle-of-the-road recommendation if you're price-sensitive but want a known brand.

Garden of Life Dr. Formulated CBD + Sleep Softgels

Practitioner-brand option. CBD plus non-cannabinoid sleep herbs (hops, valerian, passionflower). Good for people who want a multi-ingredient formula instead of CBD-only.

Drug interactions and safety (the part most articles skip)

CBD interacts with more medications than most people realize. It's processed by the same liver enzymes (CYP450) that metabolize many prescription drugs, which means CBD can raise or lower the concentration of those drugs in your system. Most sleep articles skip this. We don't, because it matters.

Talk to your doctor before using CBD if you take any of the following:

  • SSRIs and SNRIs (sertraline, fluoxetine, venlafaxine, duloxetine). CBD can raise blood levels of some SSRIs, increasing side effects.
  • Benzodiazepines (lorazepam, alprazolam, diazepam). Additive sedation and drug-level interactions.
  • Blood thinners (warfarin especially). CBD can significantly increase warfarin levels and bleeding risk.
  • Anti-seizure medications (clobazam, valproate). Well-documented interactions.
  • Thyroid medication (levothyroxine). CBD may affect absorption; separate doses by several hours.
  • Statins (atorvastatin, simvastatin). Interaction risk via CYP3A4.
  • Immunosuppressants (tacrolimus, cyclosporine). Meaningful interaction.
  • Chemotherapy medications. Complex interactions, always discuss with your oncologist.

CBD is generally safe for healthy adults not on prescription meds. But if you're on anything in the list above, the smart move is a 5-minute conversation with your prescriber before you start.

Other safety notes:

  • Don't drive immediately after taking a sleep-dose of CBD, especially a CBD+CBN+THC combo.
  • Skip CBD during pregnancy and breastfeeding. There isn't enough safety data.
  • If you have a history of liver disease, talk to your doctor. Very high daily doses have been associated with liver enzyme elevations.

CBD for kids and pets

Kids: We recommend parents talk to a pediatrician before giving any CBD product to a child, full stop. That said, some families use low-dose, kid-formulated CBD for sleep anxiety. If you go that route, only use products specifically formulated for children with lab-tested dosing. Wild Theory Kids Sleep Gummy - Dreamy Bites is the one we carry that's designed for kids.

Pets: Yes, dogs and cats have endocannabinoid systems too, and a meaningful number of our customers use CBD for pet anxiety, thunderstorm phobia, or senior-dog sleep issues. Medterra Pets CBD Calming Pet Chews is the pet-specific formulation. Never give a human product (especially a gummy with xylitol, which is toxic to dogs) to your pet.

What to check on a CBD product label

The CBD market has cleaned up significantly since 2018, but quality still varies wildly brand to brand. Here's what to look for:

Certificate of Analysis (COA). Third-party lab testing that confirms the CBD/CBN content and checks for pesticides, heavy metals, and residual solvents. A real COA has a batch number matching the product in your hand. If a brand can't produce one on request, walk away.

Full-spectrum vs broad-spectrum vs isolate. Full-spectrum contains trace THC (under 0.3% by federal law). Broad-spectrum has CBD + other cannabinoids but no THC. Isolate is CBD only, no other cannabinoids. For sleep specifically, full- or broad-spectrum tend to outperform isolate because of the "entourage effect" (multiple cannabinoids working together).

Clear cannabinoid content. The label should tell you how many mg of CBD and CBN per serving, not just total bottle content.

US-grown hemp. Most quality brands source from Colorado, Oregon, Kentucky, or North Carolina. Domestic hemp is subject to USDA oversight.

No proprietary blend vagueness. If a product says "500mg sleep blend" without breaking down what's in the blend, skip it.

All the brands we carry publish COAs. If you want to see one for any product, ask us in-store or we can email it.

When CBD isn't the answer

A short but important section. CBD isn't the right tool for everyone. If any of these describe you, consider other options first:

  • Sleep apnea. See a sleep specialist for a sleep study. CBD does nothing for apnea and can mask symptoms.
  • Severe insomnia (can't sleep more than 2 to 3 hours a night for weeks). This is a medical situation. Talk to your primary care or a sleep doctor.
  • Depression-related sleep disturbance. Address the underlying depression with your doctor. CBD is an adjunct at best, not a treatment.
  • Racing heart, chest pain, night sweats. These can point to thyroid issues, perimenopause, or cardiovascular concerns. Get labs first.
  • Shift work or jet lag. Melatonin, light therapy, and schedule adjustment are more effective.

CBD is a useful tool for specific sleep problems. It isn't a universal solvent.
