California Proposition 65 Warnings

Some products we sell carry a warning under California's Proposition 65. Where one applies, it appears on the product page near the top, before you add the item to your cart.

A Proposition 65 warning does not mean a product is unsafe or that it fails any safety standard. It means the product can expose you to a chemical on a list California maintains, at a level the state says requires notice. Lead and cadmium are the two that come up most often in supplements. Both occur naturally in soil, and plants take them up, so they turn up in botanical, greens, protein, and mineral products no matter how carefully those products are made.

The warnings we use

Food, beverages, and dietary supplements use California's food warning:

WARNING: Consuming this product can expose you to chemicals including lead, which is known to the State of California to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov/food.

The chemical named changes from product to product. When more than one applies, they all go in the same warning rather than a separate one for each.

Topicals, pet products, and other non-food items use California's consumer product warning, which carries the state's warning symbol:

WARNING: This product can expose you to Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which is known to the State of California to cause birth defects or other reproductive harm. For more information go to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov.

California added Δ⁹-tetrahydrocannabinol to its list in January 2020. It shows up in hemp-derived products, including some sold as CBD.

How we decide which products get a warning

We warn where the manufacturer warns, where a listed chemical is documented in the product, or where California has identified the category. We do not put a blanket warning on the whole catalog; a warning on everything tells you nothing.

Manufacturers change formulas and labels, and our product pages can lag behind what is printed on the package. Read the label on the product you receive.
