Q: How is Panplex 2-Phase supposed to help with digestion? A: It works in two steps. First, the stomach side: 320 mg betaine HCl, 220 mg pepsin, and 200 mg L-glutamic acid HCl help break down food there. Then the second part kicks in with pancreatin and 130 mg ox bile to help digest things farther along.
Q: Should I take this with food or on an empty stomach? A: With meals. The usual directions are 1 or 2 capsules with meals twice daily. I wouldn't take it on an empty stomach, because the HCl can feel harsh for some people.
Q: Why does this one have betaine HCl in it? A: It's there to support stomach acid. Each 2-capsule serving gives you 320 mg, so people usually go for this one with heavier meals or when food feels like it just kind of sits there.
Q: I've heard digestive enzymes can bother people with heartburn. Is that true with this one? A: Yes, it can. I wouldn't use this one if you already have heartburn, gastritis, or a peptic ulcer, because the betaine HCl and pepsin may make that worse.
Q: Does Panplex 2-Phase have enzymes for carbs, protein, and fat? A: Yes. The pancreatin gives amylase at 25,200 USP units for carbs, protease at 25,200 USP units for protein, and lipase at 2,016 USP units for fat per 2 capsules.
