Douglas Laboratories Methyl Folate L-5-MTHF

Understanding B Vitamins can feel a little intimidating — especially when you get into Vitamin B9. That’s because it shows up in a few forms and goes by more than one name.

But don’t let that throw you off! Whatever you call it—Folate, Vitamin B9, Levomefolic Acid, 5-Methyltetrahydrofolate, or 5-MTHF—taking a supplement like this one can help you get your daily dose of this essential vitamin.*

Even better, this formula includes Folate in the form of 5-MTHF. That means your body can use it directly, without needing extra conversion steps. It provides L-5-MTHF, the bioactive form of folate, which can be used directly by the body.* This form is often used for nervous system and brain health support.*

So, why is folate important? Short answer: quite a few reasons. Most notably, Folate:

  • Is essential for pregnant women: There’s a reason this vitamin is included in almost every prenatal vitamin! It plays a key role in infant development and is important for healthy brain and spine development.*

  • Promotes cognitive function: Folate doesn’t just matter for infant cognitive function, either. It also plays a role in brain health in adults.*

  • Helps with balanced mood: It helps maintain a balanced mood and helps the body manage occasional everyday stress.*

  • Helps out your heart: Folate is good for cardiovascular function, too. It does so by helping maintain healthy blood pressure already within the normal range.* Folate also helps support cardiovascular health and helps maintain healthy homocysteine levels already within the normal range.*

If you’re looking for more heart support, consider Lively Vitamin Co. Multivitamin. Then, add heart-targeted nutrients like Pure Encapsulations CoQ10 for cardiovascular function and Pure Encapsulations Nitric Oxide Ultra to further support your heart.*

FAQs About Douglas Laboratories Methyl Folate L-5-MTHF Tablets

Q: Does this use the active form of folate? A: Yes. It uses L-methylfolate, specifically Metafolin®, which is a form your body can use directly.

Q: How much should I take per day? A: One tablet a day. I’d usually take it with breakfast or lunch so it’s easier to remember.

Q: I've heard methylfolate is different from folic acid. Is that true? A: Yes. They’re different forms. Methylfolate is the already-active form of folate, so some people prefer it over plain folic acid for that reason.

Q: Should I take this if I'm pregnant or trying to conceive? A: Maybe, but check with your OB or midwife before starting this one. Folate matters a lot in pregnancy, but I’d still want your provider to confirm the right amount for you.

Q: My doctor said to watch interactions. Does methylfolate interact with medications? A: It can. Check with your pharmacist or doctor if you take prescription meds, especially for seizures, mood, or cancer treatment, since folate can matter with some of those.

Q: Why does this only have folate and not B12 too? A: Because it’s a folate-only supplement. If you need both, you can pair it with B12 or use a combo product instead.
