Thorne Advanced Iron Complex (formerly Ferrasorb)

Thorne renamed Ferrasorb to Advanced Iron Complex. Same well-absorbed formula in new packaging: 36 mg of elemental iron per capsule as Ferrochel® ferrous bisglycinate chelate, paired with the active forms of folate, B6, and B12 plus vitamin C.

Iron is needed to build healthy red blood cells, which carry oxygen through the body. Conventional iron forms like ferrous sulfate are hard to absorb and often cause stomach upset, constipation, or nausea. Thorne reacts the iron with the amino acid glycine (chelation) to help the body take it in with fewer of those side effects.*

The B-vitamin cofactors are along for a reason. Folate, B6, and B12 each support healthy red blood cell formation, and vitamin C helps the body absorb non-heme iron.* The folate is delivered as L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate, the form the body uses directly.

  • 36 mg elemental iron per capsule as Ferrochel® bisglycinate

  • Active B12 (methylcobalamin) and active folate (L-5-MTHF, 667 mcg DFE)

  • Vitamin C (15 mg) and P5P (active B6, 5 mg)

  • Designed for better tolerability than ferrous sulfate

  • Gluten free, dairy free, soy free

Good fit for menstruating women, vegetarians and vegans, older adults, athletes, people recovering from blood loss, and anyone whose lab work has flagged low iron or ferritin. Talk with your healthcare provider before starting if you are pregnant, on medications, or have a medical condition.

Suggested Use: Take 1 capsule one to three times daily, or as recommended by your healthcare practitioner. Taking with food may improve tolerability.

Cautions: Keep out of reach of children. Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under six — in case of overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately. If pregnant, nursing, taking medications, or managing a medical condition, talk with your healthcare provider before use. Not recommended concurrent with methotrexate cancer therapy (5-MTHF can interfere with its activity); folate is generally safe alongside methotrexate when used for psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis.

Allergy Warning: This product is contraindicated in anyone with a known hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients.

FAQs About Thorne Advanced Iron Complex (formerly Ferrasorb) — 60 Capsules

Q: Does Ferrasorb support healthy iron status and red blood cell production? A: Yes, that's the main reason people buy it. Each capsule has 36 mg of iron as Ferrochel ferrous bisglycinate, a form that's typically well absorbed and can help support healthy iron intake and utilization.*

Q: Why does this one have B12, folate, and B6 in it too? A: They're there to help with healthy red blood cell production,* not just add iron by itself. You get 300 mcg of B12 as methylcobalamin, 400 mcg of folate as L-5-MTHF, and 5 mg of B6 as P5P.

Q: Should I take it with food or on an empty stomach? A: I'd start with food if iron tends to bother your stomach. The usual directions are 1 capsule one to three times a day. Iron also tends to absorb better if you don't take it around coffee, tea, calcium, or dairy.

Q: I've heard iron can be constipating. Is this one easier on the stomach? A: For a lot of people, yes. Ferrasorb uses iron bisglycinate, which is often easier on the stomach than cheaper forms like ferrous sulfate, but if you're sensitive, you still might notice nausea or constipation.

Q: My doctor said to be careful with folate. Does this use folic acid? A: No, it uses L-5-MTHF instead of folic acid. That's the methylated form of folate. If you're on methotrexate cancer therapy, check with your doctor before taking it.

Q: Are there any medication interactions or safety concerns with Ferrasorb? A: Yes. Iron can get in the way of some medications, including thyroid meds and certain antibiotics, so it's usually smart to take them a few hours apart. If you're pregnant, nursing, or on prescription meds, check with your doctor first.
