Plant Therapy Organic Frankincense Serrata Essential Oil
Frankincense Serrata is believed to be the oldest documented type of Frankincense, and is referenced in the Bible and Ayurvedic medicine. Our Organic Frankincense Serrata Essential Oil, also known as Olibanum, is steam distilled from the gum resin of the tree. It has been used for thousands of years by native people as an incense, in wellness rituals, and in cosmetics.

Frankincense Serrata is high in natural constituents called alpha thujene, alpha-pinene, and limonene. These components belong to the monoterpenes chemical family, which makes Frankincense Serrata an excellent choice for supporting joint comfort and healthy-looking skin.* A topical application of Organic Frankincense Serrata Essential Oil, diluted to 3%, can help with joint comfort and post-exercise muscle relaxation.*
Like its sister oil, Frankincense Carteri, Frankincense Serrata is also helpful for nourishing and promoting healthy skin.* It may also help improve the appearance of scars, stretch marks, and blemishes.*
When diffused, Organic Frankincense Serrata may help support immune function and respiratory comfort.* You may want to choose Frankincense Serrata when you’re in need of a deodorizer or room-freshening aroma. It can be used as part of a freshening aromatherapy blend to help deodorize a room. In aromatherapy, this rich, sweet-smelling essential oil offers a deeply calming, grounding aroma that promotes relaxation and emotional balance.* It’s a perfect essential oil for meditation, prayer, or when working through big emotional and spiritual valleys.
What’s the Difference Between Frankincense Serrata and Carteri?
The differences between all Frankincense Essential Oils (for there are four!) are difficult to pinpoint. All of them offer very similar traditional uses, though with differing chemistry. The primary difference lies in the aroma.
Frankincense Carterii: This is the most well-known and commonly used Organic Frankincense Essential Oil. Frankincense Carterii has an intoxicatingly smooth, relaxing aroma that is deep, rich, and grounding. It is particularly prized for helping support healthy-looking, revitalized skin and can be used in serums or creams for the face.*
Frankincense Serrata: The aroma of Organic Frankincense Serrata is more sweet and delicate than other types of Frankincense, with a hint of pine. Organic Frankincense Serrata Essential Oil has a long history of traditional use in aromatherapy and topical wellness applications. Frankincense serrata is often used to support joint comfort and the body’s healthy inflammatory response.*

FAQs About Plant Therapy Organic Frankincense Serrata Essential Oil
Q: Why do people usually pick frankincense serrata over other essential oils? A: Mostly for diffusion and massage blends. It's just organic Boswellia serrata oil, and people usually use it for a grounding scent, in post-workout body oils, or mixed into skin oils at a low dilution.
Q: Can I put this straight on my skin? A: No. Keep it diluted, and don't go over 3% in a carrier oil.
Q: My skin gets reactive pretty easily. Is this one gentle enough? A: It's usually better tolerated than some stronger oils, but I'd still be careful. Start low, patch test first, and stay well under that 3% max if your skin is reactive.
Q: What's the easiest way to use it in a diffuser? A: Use 2 to 3 drops per 100 mL of water. If you want more of a breathing blend, try 3 drops of this one with 2 drops eucalyptus globulus, 1 drop rosemary, and 1 drop spruce or fir needle.
Q: I've heard frankincense is good for scars and blemishes. Is that what this is for? A: A lot of people add a drop or two to a facial oil or serum blend, but not at full strength. Since this bottle is straight Boswellia serrata oil with no dilution listed, I'd keep facial use very diluted and avoid the eye area.
Q: Pregnant or nursing, would you use this one? A: I'd check with your OB or midwife before starting this one. Same goes for using it on kids, since the bottle says to keep it out of reach of children.
