Suggested Use: Take 3 capsules daily or as recommended by your health professional.

Cautions: Keep out of the reach of children. Consult a physician before taking this product if you are pregnant, nursing, taking any medications, or have a medical condition. As vitamin K interferes with the effect of anticoagulant drugs (like Coumadin), the concurrent use of these agents should be avoided. 5-methyltetrahydrofolate (5-MTHF) supplementation is not recommended concurrent with methotrexate cancer therapy, as it can interfere with methotrexate's anti-neoplastic activity; however, this folate source has not been shown to interfere with the anti-inflammatory activity of methotrexate. An individual taking methotrexate for psoriasis or rheumatoid arthritis can safely take a supplement containing folate. Accidental overdose of iron-containing products is a leading cause of fatal poisoning in children under six. In case of accidental overdose, call a doctor or poison control center immediately. Vitamin C can cause diarrhea in some individuals in large doses, which can vary from person to person and resolves when the amount is reduced.

Allergy Warning: This product is contraindicated in an individual with a history of hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients. Iodine may occasionally cause an allergic reaction in some individuals.

FAQs About Thorne Research Basic Prenatal Capsules

Q: How do I take this prenatal? A: Take 3 capsules a day. I’d take them with food. If your stomach is sensitive, split them up instead of taking all 3 at once.

Q: Does this use methylfolate or folic acid? A: It uses methylfolate, not folic acid. You get 1.7 mg DFE of folate, with 1 mg as L-5-methyltetrahydrofolate. Some people do better with that than regular folic acid.

Q: Why does this one have so much iron? A: Because it’s a prenatal, and iron needs go up in pregnancy. This one has 45 mg of iron as ferrous bisglycinate. That form is often gentler on the stomach than some others, but it can still constipate some people.

Q: I've heard prenatals can make you nauseous. Is this one easier on the stomach? A: Usually, yes. A lot of people find this one easier because the iron is bisglycinate and the minerals are in citrate or chelated forms. I’d still take it with a meal.

Q: Should I take extra calcium or magnesium with this? A: Maybe. This one gives 180 mg of calcium and 90 mg of magnesium per 3 capsules, so if your provider wants you taking more, you may need to add those separately.

Q: My doctor said to watch vitamin K or methotrexate. Is that a concern here? A: Yes. There’s 100 mcg of vitamin K in this, so if you’re on Coumadin or another anticoagulant, check with your prescriber first. I’d also avoid taking it with methotrexate cancer treatment unless your doctor specifically tells you to.

Q: Is this okay while trying to conceive or nursing too? A: Yes, that’s one of the main reasons people pick it. Still, if you’re pregnant or nursing, check with your OB or midwife before starting it.
