Where this silica comes from
Red algae, harvested from the sea and dried into a powder. Most silica supplements use bamboo extract or horsetail instead, so if you've been comparing labels, that's the difference you're looking at.
Red algae brings trace minerals along with the silica, since it's a whole dried marine plant rather than an isolated extract. Horsetail is worth knowing about for a different reason: it contains an enzyme that breaks down thiamine, which is why it isn't recommended for long stretches. Red algae carries no such caveat.
What silica does
