FAQs About Solgar Vitamin D3 (Cholecalciferol) Softgels

Q: Does this use D2 or D3? A: D3. It uses cholecalciferol, which is the form most people want for bones, immune health, and calcium absorption.

Q: How many softgels should I take per day? A: It depends on the strength. The 1,000 IU is one softgel twice a day with meals. The 5,000 IU and 10,000 IU are one softgel a day, preferably with a meal.

Q: Why does the 1,000 IU version list fish? A: Because that strength uses fish liver oil in the softgel. If you avoid fish, skip the 25 mcg one, since it contains cod, haddock, and pollock.

Q: Should I take vitamin D with food? A: Yes. D3 is fat-soluble, so taking it with a meal usually makes the most sense.

Q: My doctor said not to overdo vitamin D. Is the 10,000 IU too much? A: Maybe. The 10,000 IU softgel gives you 250 mcg, which is 1,250% of the daily value. I’d only use that dose if your practitioner specifically told you to.

Q: Does this have soy or common allergens in it? A: The 5,000 IU does have soybean oil, so if you avoid soy, I’d pass on that one. The 1,000 IU has fish, and all three use gelatin, so none of them are vegetarian.

Q: Are there any medication concerns with vitamin D3? A: Yes. I’d check with your pharmacist if you take thiazide diuretics, digoxin, calcium supplements, or anything related to high calcium, since vitamin D affects calcium absorption.
