What is a Berkey? A Berkey is a 3-step water filter system that removes pollutants with a microfilter, then absorbs contaminants, and lastly adsorbs viruses by pulling them out of the water. 1. In step 1, the filtering element removes contaminants by twisting them through a tortuous path structure similar to a roller coaster with corkscrews. This exclusive filter element promotes the removal of toxic chemicals like parasites, bacteria, and sediment.
2. The ion exchange in step 2 works like the box of baking soda in your fridge by attracting heavy metal ions from the water. Instead of being forced through the filter, they are permanently attached to the filter — which means they won’t be in your water!
3. Step 3 utilizes the phenomenon known as adsorption, which results in fewer viruses in your drinking water. The ionic adsorption microfiltration system forces the viruses, which float on the surface of the water, to cling to the filter through electrostatic charges. This process is similar to when your hair or clothes have static and stick to your body. Other water filters achieve this with chemicals like chlorine, but Berkey purifies your water without chemicals!
